New App Enhancing Helicopter Trip Planning
October 3, 2014
Helipaddy is a new app developed for both iOS and Android platforms that is going to enhance helicopter trip planning.
The app, which is free to download, enables pilots and their passengers to save their favourite sites and share sites with their friends. It can be used to store VRP’s, too. An optional yearly membership of £29.99 will then give access to a fully moderated database of 1000’s of places to land to eat, to stay or even just to walk the dog throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland and France.
Helipaddy incorporates live GPS tracking on all the latest smartphones and shows basic airspace, thus enabling users to navigate efficiently to a landing site. Helipaddy supports the GPX file format and landing sites can be easily opened in Skydemon as waypoints. The Helipaddy pin accurately marks the exact landing site where possible and, in the majority of cases, there are photographs of the establishment.
Helipaddy is also great for airfields and farm landing strips with essential information on refuelling and, especially useful in the case of French airfields, whether you can use a standard credit card. Whilst the app is new, we are providing all the airfield information for free.
When flying click the ‘Safari mode’ button and the map tracks you in the air, automatically popping up sites within a 2nm radius. You can then satisfy your curiosity as to the exact location of the Great Train Robbery, Camelot or the history of a particular ruined castle. There are automatic 1, 2 and 5 minute markers to help time arrival and the ability to send a landing request to a particular establishment with one click.
There is an Events page so airfields and other places can publish their upcoming fixtures and a system to leave a comment for other users on any pad. Paid-up members can log into a members area to see events online.
We know that Helipaddy is unique and will enable pilots to discover new places to land and new landscapes to explore. We are excited about version 2 which is already in the pipeline with a bunch of new features and extending our range further into Spain, Italy and the USA and including a friends-location feature.
